Juan Mata has been rewarded for the entertainment he has provided in his first Chelsea season by the fans voting him the club's Player of the Season.

The Spanish playmaker becomes the first new arrival at the club to pick up the accolade in his debut season since Ruud Gullit in 1996.

'I just have to say thank you,' Mata said.

'It is my first season here so it is even more special for me and I want to say thank you to my team-mates and the staff and all the people who voted for me. I am realising what it means to play for Chelsea.

'I didn't expect it but I have had the opportunity to play a lot of games and enjoy English football. It has been an amazing season as we won the FA Cup in my first year and we have the chance to win the Champions League. It is history for this club and I will never forget this season.

'My debut was a dream debut with a goal and a win against Norwich and the FA Cup final is the other highlight.'

'Here the games are more box-to-box and I had to adapt physically but I think I improved a lot and I wish next season will be better for us and for me as well.'

The other nominated players in contention for the Player of the Year Award were Branislav Ivanovic and Ramires.

Ramires won the Chelsea Goal of the Season award for the second year running.

A year ago his stunning individual effort against Manchester City at home was the fans' choice. This year his never-to-be-forgotten chip after Frank Lampard's pass in Barcelona to help knock the European champions out of the Champions League was the popular choice.

The Players' Player of the Year Award, chosen by his fellow professionals at the club, also went to Ramires.

'It is really special to receive this in my second year here and I hope to win it again,' was his response.

In the first honour handed out at Thursday evening's at Stamford Bridge, Lucas Piazon was named Young Player of the Year.

The 18-year-old Brazilian attacker was part of the side that won the FA Youth Cup Final just 24 hours earlier.

President Obama and Steny Hoyer supports Gay Marriage

Following the lead of President Barack Obama, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer endorsed gay marriage Thursday, moving beyond his earlier support for civil unions.

In a statement, the Maryland Democrat compared laws against gay marriage to anti-miscegenation statutes.

“I have believed that the phrase ‘civil union’ was an appropriate definition of a relationship that is both different and the same between two people of the same sex. And I have believed strongly that such couples must be treated equally under the law,” Hoyer said. “Because I believe that equal treatment is a central tenet of our nation, I believe that extending the definition of marriage to committed relationships between two people, irrespective of their sex, is the right thing to do and will not, in any way, undermine the institution of marriage so important to our society nor impose a threat to any individual marriage.”

With Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid backing gay marriage Wednesday, Hoyer was the lone gay marriage holdout among top Democratic congressional leaders.

Like Obama, he was almost certain to face political pressure on the issue before the fall. The Maryland General Assembly passed same-sex marriage legislation earlier this spring, and the issue is likely to be up for a referendum in November.

Blasts, gunshots 'rock Nigeria's Maiduguri'

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Two explosions and gunshots rang out around a church in Nigeria's restive city of Maiduguri, the hotbed of deadly Islamist insurgency, but it was unclear if anyone was hurt, a security source said Friday.

"In the late hours we had two explosions followed by sporadic gunshots. I don't have any further information now on casualties," a security official who did not want to be named, told newsmen of the incident on Thursday night.
He said the attack happened near a church in an area where a mosque owned by Boko Haram was razed during a 2009 crackdown on the Islamist group.
DG saw truckloads of soldiers deployed to the area of the attack on Friday morning.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and the home base of Boko Haram, has seen some of the worst violence blamed on the extremist sect, which has focused its attacks on the mainly Muslim north.

Boko Haram's increasingly bloody insurgency has claimed more than 1,000 lives since mid-2009.

Tragedy:- Nigerian gynaecologist killed in Cameroon

A Cameroon-based Nigerian gynecologist, Dr. Samuel Ogoke, has been found dead in his home in Garoua, northern Cameroon.
Ogoke, 43, hailed from Ahiara in Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo.
The Chairman of Imo/Abia Association in Garoua, Mr Ibeabuchi Ololo, on phone from Garoua on Wednesday said that Ogoke was allegedly killed in his house on May 8.

Kidnapped Company MD rescued, N3m ransom recovered in Rivers

The Managing Director, Pedero Down Nigeria Limited, Otunba Femi Ogunleye, who was kidnapped by some gunmen at about 10.45 on May 3 has been rescued by the police in Rivers State.



He was rescued at about 6.30 pm on Tuesday, following a tip-off during investigation. The police were also said to have recovered the N3 million ransom paid to the kidnappers and shot dead one of the suspects.

A 31-year old Nigerian, who was sentenced to death as a juvenile has expressed his happiness at being released from prison and reunited with his family after such a very long time.

Patrick Okoroafor regained his freedom following a relentless global campaign by Amnesty International. 

Okoroafor was just 14 when he was arrested in 1995 and 16 when sentenced to death for armed robbery, a crime which he claimed innocence.

The Oyo State government has set up an endowment fund for children of the late Nigerian ex-international, Rashidi Yekini. This was made known yesterday after the state executive council meeting by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon Dapo Lam-Adesina.

According to him, the endowment fund, which will be strictly for the children of the late football star, would be managed in conjunction with the family of the deceased.
